O belga Gianni Meersman (Etixx-Quick Step) venceu neste domingo (21) a 2ª etapa da Vuelta a España 2016, ao completar o percurso de 160,8 km entre Ourense e Baiona em 4h16min39. A vitória se deu no sprint final, onde Meersman bateu o alemão Michael Schwarzmann (Bora-Argon 18) e o dinamarquês Magnus Cort Nielsen (Orica-BikeExchange), segundo e terceiro colocados, respectivamente.
Com a vitória, o belga é o primeiro ciclista a vestir a camisa verde, de líder na classificação por pontos desta 71ª edição da Vuelta a España. Já a camisa vermelha, de líder na geral, ficou com o polonês Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky), quarto colocado nesta 2ª etapa, que manteve a liderança nas mãos da equipe britânica.
Dentre os favoritos, o britânico Chris Froome (Sky) e o colombiano Nairo Quintana (Movistar) se mantiveram entre os 10 primeiros na classificação geral, na quarta e na sétima colocações, respectivamente. Apesar de ter perdido mais 2 segundos em relação ao líder (agora são 52 segundos de diferença), o espanhol Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) subiu da 50ª para a 40ª posição na geral.
Nesta segunda-feira (22), o pelotão encara na 3ª etapa o primeiro percurso montanhoso da Vuelta a España 2016. Serão 176,4 km entre Marín e Dumbría.
