O britânico Chris Froome fez história neste domingo em Madri. O ciclista da Sky garantiu o título da Volta da Espanha menos de três meses após vencer a Volta da França. Seu título estava encaminhado desde sábado. Só uma catástrofe tiraria o caneco do britânico.
Ele rodou 117,6 km de Arroyomolinos a Madri e terminou a disputa 2min15s à frente do vice-campeão, o italiano Vincenzo Nibali, da Bahrain-Merida. O russo Ilnur Zakarin, da Team Katusha, ficou com a terceira posição.
Froome foi recebido na Praça Cibeles, cartão-postal da capital espanhola, com muita festa. No entanto, quem mais arrancou aplausos do público foi o atleta da casa Alberto Contador.
O espanhol já havia anunciado que a Volta da Espanha seria sua última competição. A despedida foi recheada de emoção, já que, no último sábado, ele venceu a penúltima etapa da disputa.
