A última etapa da La Vuelta 2018 confirmou a vitória do britânico Simon Yates, que estava dada como certa desde as últimas etapas, mas principalmente na penúltima (ao todo, a La Vuelta teve 21 etapas, sendo que primeira começou no dia 25 de agosto). O italiano Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) provou novamente ser o mais rápido: ele fez o trajeto de 100.9 km entre Alcorcón e Madri em 2h02min28s à frente do campeão mundial Peter Sagan e seu compatriota Giacomo Nizzolo.
Embora já tenha participado de outras seis edições da La Vuelta, esta foi a primeira vez que Simon Yates venceu. Dessa forma, ele se torna o segundo britânico a levar um título desse porte para seu país — o primeiro foi Chris Froome, no ano passado.
Nas seis participações anteriores nas três principais corridas por etapas, Yates tinha como melhores resultados o sexto lugar na La Vuelta em 2016 e o sétimo na Volta a França em 2017.
