Um dos favoritos a conquistar o título da Vuelta da España, o britânico Simon Yates fechou a primeira semana da prova na ponta da classificação geral. O representante da Mitchelton-Scott assumiu a camisa vermelha na nona etapa, realizada neste domingo e que antecedeu o primeiro dia de descanso da Volta.
Yates foi o nono colocado da etapa vencida pelo americano Benjamin King. Ele concluiu o trecho de 200.8 km entre Talavera de la Reina e La Covatilla em 5h33min27s, com 2min49s de diferença para King, que venceu escapado do restante do pelotão.
Isso, no entanto, foi o suficiente para deixá-lo na primeira colocação da classificação geral, com apenas 1 segundo de frente sobre o espanhol Alejandro Valverde. O veterano venceu a etapa de sábado – 195.1 km entre Linares e Almadén – com 4h35min54s, superando o campeã mundial Peter Sagan no sprint.
Simon Yates lidera a classificação geral da Vuelta com tempo total de 36h4min52s, 1s à frente de Valverde e 14s à frente do colombiano Nairo Quintana. O alemão Emanuel Buchmann e o espanhol Jon Izaguirre Insausti, 16s e 17s atrás do líder, respectivamente, completam o top 5.
Os ciclistas da Volta da Espanha retomam o trabalho nesta terça-feira, com a décima etapa da prova. São 177 km entre Salamanca e Bermillo de Sayago, em um trajeto de pouca elevação.
