Um estudo idealizado pela Springer, editora de revistas científicas, concluiu que mais de 40% dos atletas utilizam substâncias proibidas. 2.167 competidores foram consultados em duas competições: o Mundial de Atletismo de Daegu, na Coreia do Sul, em 2011, e os Jogos Pan-Árabes de Doha, no Catar, também no mesmo ano.
Os atletas aceitaram participar da pesquisa com a garantia de que não teriam suas identidades reveladas. A Springer calcula que 43,6% dos esportistas se valeram de materiais proibidos buscando melhorar a performance.
As descobertas da editora contrastam com o índice baixo que testa positivo nos exames promovidos pela Agência Mundial Antidoping (WADA). A quantidade de atletas flagrados nos exames não ultrapassa 2%.
Segundo o estudo, as ferramentas utilizadas pelas agências internacionais podem ser burladas por técnicas de ponta. A Springer pretende repassar seu método de pesquisa a agências internacionais para colaborar com os avanços nos exames antidoping.
